The Daughter of the Rabbit and the Horse
By Amy Liao

Born the daughter of the rabbit and the horse,
a second-generation classic, the old tired tale,
One who weathered through the storm,
the village hope, enough intuition to break the mold,
the end of a lineage of factory workers,
a new emergence of the name that I bear,
The other from a line of laborers,
the standard of the east, expected of greatness
a classic immigrant success story,
of which one day I would be expected to emulate
before I was even born,
Bound by a subject, forced by old age,
and so from a line of stories not yet complete,
I emerged,
the anomaly of biology, the oddity of study,
a different tale from the ones prior to me,
and yet,
I feel pledged to nothing.
