- About Us | The Koi Kollective
About Us Fostering Asian activism, community, and pride. Founded by college students Lina Lin and Amy Liao, The Koi Kollective aims to promote the celebration of the Asian experience and culture through creative outlets and expression. What began as a late-night text conversation between two friends blossomed into a mission to inspire Asian activism, community, and pride. Our Mission Founded by Philadelphia college students Lina Lin and Amy Liao, what began as a late-night text conversation between two high school friends in late 2024 blossomed into The Koi Kollective, a project that aims to inspire Asian activism, community, and pride through creative expressions. We welcome all forms of media — including opinion pieces, personal narratives, poetry, art, and photography — that align with our desire to celebrate and explore Asian identities, stories, and perspectives. Lin and Liao felt propelled to create a supportive space where students have creative control. The two felt that Asian Americans, in particular, were in much need of opportunities to voice their expressions. As Chinese Americans, Lin and Liao both felt there was a lack of safe spaces for Asian youth to share their perspectives and express appreciation for Asian culture. The amount of racism and discrimination towards Asians within the past few years was a major motivating factor that pushed Lin and Liao to initiate The Koi Kollective. This name is derived from the Asia-originated koi fish. Koi fish are said to swim upstream against strong currents to reach a waterfall, symbolizing the ability to persevere and overcome obstacles to achieve a goal. This resilience and determination serves as a metaphor for our mission to amplify underrepresented voices and celebrate the Asian experience. Meet The Team Lina Lin Founder and Editor-in-Chief Hello! My name is Lina, and I'm a current freshman at Drexel University, majoring in Economics and Business. I'm really passionate about activism, civic engagement, and building community! My friend Amy and I started this project because growing up, we noticed there weren't a lot of spaces centering around the Asian experience through narrative and publication. We wanted to build that community so people could feel represented and empowered, and so we started this project for people to share their personal experiences in hopes that others could find their voice through creative expression. At Drexel, I am currently involved in the Drexel Economics Society and Women in Business. In my free time, I like to read historical fiction and novels, with some of my favorite books including All the Light We Cannot See, Pachinko, and The Song of Achilles. Some of my other hobbies include making art (especially line art and painting!), watching shows, and trying new food. I am really excited for everyone to be involved, and I hope there's great joy to be found in what we're all creating together :) Amy Liao Founder and Editor-in-Chief Hey, my name is Amy! I am a first year at the University of Pennsylvania potentially studying Philosophy, Politics, & Economics and Behavioral & Decision Sciences with minors in Consumer Psychology and Legal Studies & History. I am so excited to work on The Koi Kollective, as I care deeply about creating a space where people have the freedom to express their creativity and appreciation for Asian culture. I became interested in publication and editorial work in high school after being a part of multiple newspapers, so I am excited to combine that with my love for Asian culture to cultivate a prideful community. At Penn, some of my involvements include Wharton Asia Exchange, The Daily Pennsylvanian, Asian Pacific Student Coalition, The WALK Magazine, and Penn Kendo. In my downtime, you can find me binging cooking videos, drinking iced matcha lattes, strolling around the Walnut Street-Rittenhouse Square area, and trying new restaurants in Chinatown. I am greatly looking forward to the future of this initiative and welcome everyone to join! Janet Yang Head of External Marketing Hi, my name is Janet, a freshman at Drexel University majoring in Marketing and Business Analytics. I love meeting new people, trying new foods, and listening to music. I enjoy listening to pop songs that keep me energized throughout the day. I’ve been drawing ever since I was a kid so I’m excited to be a part of The Koi Kollective in establishing our brand identity and keeping everything colorful. I’m super passionate about my culture, I love exploring and learning new things about it. I’m excited to see how The Koi Kollective will teach me much more about my Asian-American identity! Maggie Gao Head of Internal Marketing Hi! My name is Maggie, and I am a freshman at Drexel University studying Marketing with a minor in Behavioral Economics & Business. With experience in editorial work and advocacy for the Asian community, I am excited to join The Koi Kollective in fostering a meaningful intersection between publication and cultural awareness. At Drexel, I am involved in The Good Idea Fund, Drexel Women in Business, Drexel Economics Society, The Triangle, and more. In my free time, I love immersing myself in the latest Chinese dramas, unraveling true crime mysteries with Stephanie Soo’s Rotten Mango podcast, mastering new songs on the keyboard piano, and maintaining my Duolingo streak for French and Spanish. I can’t wait to watch The Koi Kollective grow and look forward to the remarkable accomplishments our team will achieve! Henry Jiang Digital Operations Hi, I'm Henry! I'm a first generation college student studying game design in Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design while studying two minors in Computer Science and Animation. Although a bit introverted, I love to meet new faces and try to work on being a better public speaker. I hope to make the most of my time in college and learn new knowledge before graduating. Currently, I am trying to learn coding by myself, volunteering in non-profits, connecting with people including my mentors, and finding other great opportunities. Some things I am doing right now would be being a part of the Westphal Student Council, the President of the Westphal Bridge Program which has 200+ members, and being an administrator/intern at my local non-profit. My favorite book series has to be the Hunger Games or anything by Rick Riordan! Oh yeah, I'm a gamer as well; some games I currently play are games such as CoC, Clash Royale, Minecraft, and Roblox! I hope I get to meet you! ? ?? Hi! Our Interns Name Intern Hello! Name Intern Hi! Name Intern Hi! Name Intern Hi! Name Intern Hi! Name Intern Hi! Our Providers
